The Reddit Zoophilia Subreddit

Reddit always seemed too public for me, and a bit flaky as well.  Kind of like those awful Facebook groups.  Not quite as bad, but similar.

I used it, rarely, to post a bit of poetry here and there & it is where I originally started the serial story "Stormy", which remains unfinished. I encouraged a few other writers there. It is where I first heard the names of a few members here. Other than that I can count on both hands the number of discussions I participated in before it was banned. My dislike for it was only that it rolled away & you had to scroll down to find where you had been the day before..

I miss it a lot, and also miss the zoo photo subreddits, everything from elegant pictures of horses, to pictures of naughty parts. And the moderating team was top notch.

Not to be "that guy..." but who?  I haven't recognized a single username other than that one nonzoo mod, I think...  And some others who won't be posting anymore.  Did I miss some?

You made allusion to one, two actually but..

Anyway, I made mention without names only to let the poster know the compliment would be appreciated. It is up to those members to name themselves if they wish, and they have no reason to here. As you know, I respect members privacy.

It's not always a good idea to use the same username across accounts, and let yourself be tracked from sites with decent attempts at security, to sites with none, or social media that openly sells your data, or old sites that have been compromised.

Example:  Someone I (used to) know used the same handle on a zoo site as he did on a vehicle enthusiast site.  His DOB and vehicle registration effectively nailed him.

Another similar:  Someone used the same email addy that he used to register at BF to reply to an ad rehoming a dog.  He ended up having to move to an adjoining country.

Kinda one of those "do as I say, not as I do" things here for me, but yeah, everything HH said above. And "silverwolf" IS my pen-name in the zoo world alone. That IS a must! Be safe!

I do have a Reddit login, lurked on the Zoophilia sub but never posted there.

I have used various versions of Dingo Jay on an assortment of zoo sites and on zoo-related IRC channels for 20-some years, but not on any other type of place.  There are a couple of emails that go with the nick that I don't use elsewhere.  Emails are far too easy to come by to risk connecting one's Zoo persona with RL business.

Some say that it's a bad idea to use a name for too long.  Maybe.  So far, though, a couple of doxxing attempts have connected 'Dingo Jay' with fake names I've used, one of them quite old.

Yes DJ it's always best to separate zoo email accounts with business email accounts. Too many times giving presentations, and the usb with your presentations was missing, you need to go into your email account to download you powerpoint presentation and everyone in your audience sees your emails briefly on the screen.

A bigger deal is that people can google email addys.  If you have activity on the popular platforms, or web presence tying to encrypted accounts, it can come up on Search.  I was surprised to find that for a $ or 2 each you can have some 3rd party outfit do one or a dozen or a hundred.  I'm pretty sure the intended purpose is, of course, "targeted advertising" (spam), but someone checking you out for whatever reason (adopting a dog) finds that you have gotten "notifications" from some zoo site using that addy, or some other such activity......

Being forced to use a certain e-mail service to access content makes me nervous, since we're on the subject. It feels a lot like harvesting to me, and for security I'd recommend against it.

I've used a great number of e-mails over the years for my 'zoo' activities. None have ever gotten my correct personal information, or any personal information at all for that matter. Any that I've tried to use that have asked for any more than a name and age have gotten dumped immediately, or used for 'normal' activities. The name given has always been "silver wolf", the age my own (why lie there?). The e-mails go the same routes as the forum activities and such.

Yes!  This!

Used to be all you needed was a username and a password to sign up for an email account.  Now they want personal info and a wireless number so they can prove your identity.  For security don't you know.  I still have a couple of seldom used legacy Yahoo addys that I have only used for "this kind" of stuff (though I cleaned them out and deleted all my contacts when they announced their new TOS).  But I still log on every few months to keep them alive; who knows when a decades-old email addy based on a non-existent identity may be useful.

Protonmail ( protonmail (dot) com ) still has free encrypted email accounts that only ask for a username and password.  I highly recommend using it.

And while we're at it, kudos to the webmaster(s) of this site:  I just changed my password to a more randomized one; the site emails you to tell you so and gives you a "back door" to get back in and get your account back if it turns out you've been hacked and someone stole your account  (like I've had happen elsewhere).  Good going guys, you run a tight ship.

I fudge my DOB a bit when I sign up.  Not a lot, but age is an identifier.  I was born "Jan 1" most places that aren't a Gov't or institutional site.

All of my zoo email accounts yield zero search results on google.

But did you scroll a few pages down and see the offers by outfits that search emails for a fee?

But yeah, it's always a good idea to google your RL self, your alternate identity usernames, your email addys, etc. and see what the rest of the world can see (but not all at the same time!  Don't search your RL identity and your alternate identity together.)   And any time you use google (and they still have the best search algorithms around) for anything, remember they spy on you!  Most search engines do.  Use your security protocols just like if you were trying to keep your "little secret".  Because you are....

This thread has morphed from Reddit into "general security" as well.  Which is great.  But how about tagging it as such at the top?

I'm recommending a movement of postings to a new topic or three where newbies can easily access the suggestions made. I'm making cyber-security/ zoo security it's own sub-forum to post said topics in. Spread out among threads, in various replies on varied topics makes it difficult for folks to find relevant information at a glance. I will tag this thread as well though, as this conversation is continuing.

Wait we are talking about mods?

I wasn't even aware you had more than two mods and I certainly wasn't aware they were on reddit.

Nevermind.  It's cool.

I don't use the same name for zoo stuff.  I got creative and came up with "SirVids" at first since i was looking for videos, then when the pun made me want to kill myself, I went a more conventional route.
