Virtual Private Network (VPN)

Can anyone here recommend a good VPN provider?

I don't use a VPN, but most of my work with anything 'Zoo Related' is done over HTTP, so I encrypt using HTTPS Everywhere, I also do some work over Keybase or Discord, so it's really not an issue / no need to have a VPN for me.

Now, if the CONTENT is even illegal in your state (there's only one, Oregon...) then you could try Private Internet Access (PIA), they are quite good.

Torguard has excellent support for several Linux distros.   Last time I used PIA I had to set it up manually.   That can make a big difference if you want to build a secure system without a lot of technical education.

That's a good point. One thing though, TOR tends to have atrocious speeds due to the constant node switching.

Also because TOR always comes from different nodes (sometimes in Russia) there are many sites that block you.  Or watch you.

(TOR = Dark Web in many eyes)

"Torguard" is short for "torrent guardian", a paid vpn designed for fast secure downloading.   They also offer private e-mail and other security oriented services.

I like to pirate my wifi coupled with a VPN and use burner yandex emails. Which suck when you need to recover an account that is attached to that email and you can't login to the email.

Due to some sites blocking Epic I now use ProtonVPN exclusively. (which didn't even exist when this thread started).

From the Protonmail outfit, it comes highly rated by some of the techy sites, is in Switzerland, and designed so even they can't see what you do or where you go.

Proton VPN originates in Switzerland, a country long on personal privacy and short on being told what to do by U.S. legislatures. They have servers in many countries, so choose one in Netherlands NL at the beginning of each session. The free plan selects one in an apparently random location, but there's a "change server" button that most often goes to Netherlands NL. There are also paid plans that let you select any country and use multiple devices.

"Proton VPN uses strong, industry-standard encryption like AES-256 and ChaCha20, combined with secure protocols (WireGuard, OpenVPN) and features like Perfect Forward Secrecy to ensure your internet traffic is encrypted, unreadable, and protected from interception. All servers also use full-disk encryption for extra security, and the service has a strict no-logs policy, making it a highly secure option for privacy."

proton.com or proton.me

Free or paid options. I find the free option has all I need.

Further developments:

News article today:

Variable retail pricing for all kinds of stuff. Retail, tickets, vehicles etc.
Companies using AI to adjust how high price you will pay, based on search history, location, education, biometrics, credit score, your vehicle's stored data, home appraisal, age, family status, device you are using, time of day, etc.

They suggested using private browsing, deleting your cookies after each session (Firefox can be set to do so automatically), using a VPN. Shopping in the middle of the week. Not using an AI shopbot. Anything to reduce your online profile.
