It is necessary for vaginas to run at least somewhat uphill.   Look up "Caslick's Procedure" for the consequences of failure.   Males then need ways to propel their semen upwards to assure conception.   Sealing it from running down and out around the body of their penis is one strategy.  Equines go so far as to create a socket fit with the mare's cervix to deliver at least some semen directly into her uterus.
