Well that's the thing-- Everyone invariably thinks of furries/anthros as human bodies with (choice of animal)'s head and feet.  There's absolutely NOTHING in medicine or biology to support that this would be the result (besides artwork imagination).  It's statistically much more likely that: 1) the cells will not be viable and will die after a few divisions, or 2) that even if the organism comes to term the internal body transformations will be unable to perform the functions needed to sustain life once removed from the mother's body life support.  As well as the probability that the resulting organic object will be a hideous random combination of tissue forms and types that could neither walk or have sex.....

*Notwithstanding CRISPR, the targeted editing of specific chromosomes, for specific purposes, which (to date) produces pretty much invisible modifications at the cellular level.  Not horse-headed humans.*

Well I still have my dreams.... But couldn't we use CRISPR to to inject a fur gene inside a human, so that the person would grow fur?

Even assuming a viable and functional offspring, the point is that mixing animal and human characteristics will quickly get you into the Uncanny Valley, and what you thought would be wonderful would very likely be nightmarish.

Would the hybrid be too Animal for Humanland but too Human for AnimalLand?

More likely fatally dysfunctional.  Body physically not working as it should in many ways, mentally torn between 2 sets of instincts, alone, psychotic as hell.

From a realistic scientific standpoint I very much agree. Not sure about the level and flavor of psychosis, but it would certainly have mental and emotional problems.

Setting all that aside, though, HeartBeat stated a wish that furries were real, and I'm saying that from a strict standpoint of appearance, you'd have created a monstrosity. Go read H.G. Wells' The Island of Doctor Moreau. That's what would happen. Just open a private browser window and search for human-animal hybrid images.

Look up 'uncanny valley'. And actually, the closer they get to looking like either humans or natural animals, the creepier they become. Picture a life-size version of MLP.

That's the thing.  By any in-use definition furries are either costumes or cartoons.  Reference:  furaffinity(dot)net

"...the creepier they become."     sort of like the 3-D renderings of "The Simpsons".  Or people in Disney animal costumes at the park.  Cartoon characters get weird as real-life creatures.

Actual research and development by competent ethical process (think: "CRISPR" not "Dr. Moreau") doesn't result in furries.  Different or enhanced properties, yeah, but not the classic "human body with animal extremities".

Quite possibly the most lucid discussion on the subject might be the first chapters or so of  "The Goat Farm" > Ramseys > Featured Authors   https://www.zoowg.org/topic/338-the-goat-farm/

Apologies to HeartBeat, Ramseys, zemlya, and furaffinity.  All copyrights yadda yadda yadda......

And we should most fervently hope that no one delves into this with competent unethical processes, because the money--lots of it--would certainly go towards military uses.

Imagine the instincts of a wolf with the brains of a human....
