If you step back to the Golden Age of Sci Fi (before it made enough money to go mainstream) you will find a lot of interesting critters.   Keywords might be  "Little Fuzzy"  "Chanur"  "Pern"

I've read the whole Chanur series; must run to about a million words. Had to read it several times to get clear on the political intrigue, and when it hit me, I realized that Pyanfar was the only person in the whole situation who fully understood the whole very scary picture. That's the real impact of this series; the furry aspect is only hinted at enough for the reader to figure out something's going on.

"Little Fuzzy" and "Fuzzy Sapiens" were wonderful. I'm pretty sure I read "Pern", but it would have been over half a century ago.

"The Ballad of Lost C'mell" is available for free here: https://www.fadedpage.com/showbook.php?pid=20170448

I didn't care for it a whole lot.

Don't forget when this was written.   In those days Star Trek's first interracial kiss was a big deal.   Gor was softcore porn.   So if you wanted to reach the juvenile market (where the money was) you had to be subtle. . . or obscure.

As a teen I read Animorphs.

Do you know who Liberace was?   Hint: he's who Elton John wanted to grow up to be.   He caused a great scandal by smiling when someone accused him of being gay.   Jim Morrison got banned from TV for singing "Come on baby light my fire .  .  ."   "Elvis the Pelvis" was banned in a dozen states for performing pelvic thrusts fully clothed on stage.

It was a very different time.

Yeah that stuff happened decades before I was born. Now it is (and should be the case) where it is politically incorrect to criticize people for being gay.

Back when I started, using the word 'fart' (among others) on the air was an instant dismissal.  Now it appears in mainstream newspaper comics.  (Zits)

Jerry Jerry Jerry

What was it about that dumb show that compelled people to watch it.

The eternal hope that one of the security guys would screw up and Jerry would get cold-cocked.

They pulled Jerry's "I Married my Horse" episode at the last minute, it was on the Guide but when the day came it was a different episode.  Never ran that I know of, at least in this country.

So critter humping is still a bridge too far even for Jerry's network...
